Online Therapy in Athens, Georgia

Online therapy for Athens adults, couples and teens, with a Georgia-licensed therapist you can keep even if you move within the state.

Therapy for Athens

Life often involves moving: a new apartment, a new job, a new city. Each move can mean starting over with a new therapist. Because MentalSpace Therapy is online and serves all of Georgia, Athens clients can keep working with the same therapist if they relocate anywhere within the state.

Athens is in Clarke County, and we serve Clarke County and every other Georgia county by secure video. Our therapists hold Georgia licenses, so you'll need to be in Georgia during sessions, but within the state, where you join from is up to you.

Who we help

Who we work with in Athens

We work with adults navigating anxiety, depression, identity questions, relationships and transitions; couples at every stage; and teens ages 13 to 17. If you're 18 or older and covered by a parent's insurance, you can still start therapy as an adult, and we'll explain how billing works on your welcome call.

You might be dealing with

  • Conflict or distance in a relationship
  • Painful experiences that still affect you today
  • Parenting stress and tension at home
  • Low mood, low energy or losing interest in things you used to enjoy

Therapy services

What therapy with us looks like

For most people, therapy starts with individual sessions: a weekly or every-other-week video appointment with one therapist who gets to know your history, your goals and the way you think. Ongoing worry, low mood, relationship strain, work stress and grief are all common reasons to begin.

Couples therapy follows a clear arc. The first two or three sessions cover your history together, what is working and what isn't, and some individual time with each partner. After that, sessions focus on practicing new ways of talking, and they taper to every other week, then monthly, as things shift.

Insurance and cost

Coverage, checked before you start

Insurance can be a maze, so we handle it. Once you submit the intake form, we verify your benefits and tell you what each session will cost. With insurance, that's as low as $0 per session, depending on your plan.

We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, Optum / UnitedHealthcare and Humana. For Georgia Medicaid, we work with Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan. Some Medicare Advantage plans through Aetna and Humana are accepted, but traditional Medicare is not. Private pay, HSA and FSA are welcome.

Plans we accept

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • Aetna
  • Cigna
  • Optum / UnitedHealthcare
  • Humana
  • Select Medicare Advantage (Aetna, Humana)
  • Amerigroup (Georgia Medicaid)
  • CareSource (Georgia Medicaid)
  • Peach State Health Plan (Georgia Medicaid)
  • Private pay welcome

As low as $0 per session with insurance, depending on your plan.

Consent, safety updates and family sessions

Around the school day

Weekdays until 7pm ET and weekends

Adolescence is its own stage, and therapy for teens should look different from therapy for adults. Our clinicians adapt approaches like CBT and DBT skills for 13- to 17-year-olds, with concrete examples, more in-session practice and less homework. Teens have a say in the pace.

For parents in Athens, the process starts with you: you complete the matching form on your teen's behalf and sign consent, and billing stays with you, never the teen. If your teen doesn't want to go, we can start with a short conversation with you or a no-pressure meet-and-greet with the therapist.

Video sessions mean your teen can join from home soon after school. With weekday hours until 7pm ET, Saturday hours from 10am to 3pm ET, and Sunday sessions by arrangement, it's easier to avoid missed classes.

How online therapy works

Online therapy, explained

If you've never done therapy over video, it's simpler than it sounds. You get a link, you join from a quiet room, and you talk with a licensed therapist who can see and hear you. Some people find it easier to open up from their own space.

Athens residents can book within our hours: 8am to 7pm ET Monday through Friday, and 10am to 3pm ET on Saturdays, plus Sunday sessions by arrangement. Headphones help with privacy if others are home. Georgia licensing means you need to be in the state for every session.

Coaching

Life and relationship coaching

Not everything calls for therapy. Life coaching is forward-looking and goal-driven: a career change, a leadership role, a transition you want to handle on purpose. Relationship coaching helps partners, daters and individuals build practical skills like communication and decision-making. Neither requires a diagnosis.

Most of our coaches hold ICF credentials. Coaching isn't a medical service, so insurance doesn't cover it, and rates are shared on your welcome call before you commit. If what you describe sounds more clinical, we'll tell you and point you to therapy instead.

Getting started

What your first session looks like

From the first form to your first session usually takes about a week. Here is the path.

  1. 1

    Tell us a little

A four-step form that takes about two minutes: who you are, what's bringing you in, how you'd like to pay, and your preferences. You don't enter any payment information online.

  2. 2

    A care coordinator calls

Within 24 to 72 hours, a real person reaches out to confirm details, answer questions and make sure we're the right fit. If we're not, we'll help you find the right place.

  3. 3

    Portal and paperwork

You get access to our secure client portal to sign consent, privacy and intake forms. We verify your benefits and tell you your per-session cost.

  4. 4

    Your first session

Fifty minutes over secure video. Your therapist gets to know you and starts building a plan with you, not a generic protocol.

Athens FAQ

Questions people ask before starting

Do I have to be in Athens for my sessions?

No. You can join from anywhere in Georgia: home, work, or somewhere else private. Because our therapists are licensed in Georgia, you do need to be in the state during every session. If you move within Georgia, you can keep the same therapist.

Do you have an office in Athens?

There's no physical office in Athens. Sessions are held by secure video with Georgia-licensed therapists, so you can meet from home, a private office, or anywhere in the state with a closed door and a good connection.

What hours can Athens clients book sessions?

Our hours are Monday through Friday from 8am to 7pm ET and Saturday from 10am to 3pm ET, with Sunday sessions by arrangement. Exact appointment times depend on your therapist's availability, and the care team will look for a recurring time that fits your schedule.

Do you accept Georgia Medicaid in Clarke County?

Yes. We work with the Georgia Medicaid plans Amerigroup, CareSource and Peach State Health Plan, and most Medicaid clients pay $0 per session. We confirm your benefits before your first session.

Can my partner and I join couples therapy from different places?

Yes, as long as you are both physically in Georgia at the time of the session. That's a licensing requirement. Many couples join from the same room; others join from two locations when work or travel keeps them apart. Both partners are covered under one session.
